A BRIEF HISTORY

In 1993, Philippe decided to build a post-and-beam barn in the 18th-century tradition to house his high-wire equipment.

In his typical “madman-of-details style,” Philippe methodically began gathering all available books on the subject, doing drawings, constructing models and acquiring antique tools. Single-handedly, he then began building his barn (actually a minibarn, a “barnette”).

Shortly thereafter, Philippe sought out Jack Sobon, the author of Philippe’s favorite books on the subject. Midway into construction, Philippe attended Jack’s workshop “Traditional Timber Framing” at Hancock Shaker Village and then became a member of the Timber Framing Guild of North America.

Continuously interrupted by professional travels, it has taken Philippe six years to finish the framing. Today, two completed bents and their respective tie-members lay on the foundation, waiting to be lifted and secured to their permanent positions.
